Kick Start 2017 with these Superfood Lattes

Superfood Lattes became an obsession for me last year. One day I popped into The Jam Jar, one of my favourite coffee shops in Newquay, to see that they had added a pink velvet latte (beetroot latte) to their menu. I joked with Jess the owner that I needed to try one because it matched my nail polish, but really I was dying to try it out. I couldn’t believe how good it tasted. Ever since then I have been totally hooked with superfood lattes and love trying new flavours including turmeric, matcha, acai and activated charcoal.

These scrummy hot drinks are a great alternative to coffee…don’t get me wrong I do still love my coffee…however they are perfect for when you want to cut down the caffeine and they have great health benefits too. They are naturally packed with an abundance of the good stuff, so you don’t need to feel as guilty drinking them.

As much as I would always prefer to drop into the Jam Jar everyday to get my daily fix, it is January after all so I decided to have a go at making them myself. My three favourite’s are matcha, turmeric and beetroot.

1.Matcha Latte

Matcha powder is finely ground green tea which I understand is filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. So not only is it a great energy booster, it also nourishes the immune system. Matcha lattes do have a slight bitter leafy taste, which is why I recommend adding a teaspoon of honey. However they are so delicious and creamy and will keep you energised all day. See the full recipe below.

2.Tumeric Latte

There is no doubt that this spicy latte will get you up and raring to go in the mornings. According to various resources online turmeric has many health benefits such as having anti inflammatory properties as well as boosting circulation. I find this golden milk feels soothing and cleansing, so perfect for those wintery days when you feel a little under the weather. This latte is also very strong in flavour so don’t be surprised if you need to take a couple of sips so your palette can get use to it. It also tastes good if you add honey and / or some ginger.

3.Beetroot Latte

Ok admittedly I can understand that veg in a mug instead of coffee sounds ridiculous. However you must trust me on this one. Beetroot lattes have a delicious sweet and earthy taste. Beetroot is known to be a great source of folic acid, Iron and antioxidants. So as well as being immune boosting it can help enhance exercise performance. Therefore before that early gym session, why not ditch the coffee and make yourself a beetroot latte.

  2. Pour the hot water into the mug and stir vigorously until the powder has disolved
  3. Warm up the milk on the hob or in a microwave, then whisk until frothy using a hand whisk or you can also whizz it in a nutribullet
